About Me

Introduction

Hi all! My name is Yousif Askar, and I am a first-year student at the University of Michigan who is planning on majoring in Computer Science and English. I was also an IB student at the International Academy of Macomb, my Higher Level classes being in IB Biology, IB Mathematics, IB History, and IB Literature. Although I did not take Spanish as a Higher Level class, I have been tutoring for 3+ years and have always loved the grammatical structures of the language.

The Problem

As a student and a tutor, I realized that many people, including myself, struggle with understanding Spanish grammar. With the stress of classes, especially within the IB, it can get difficult. To add on that, it seems like not a single site can give a straightfoward, simple explanation of when to induce the subjunctive mood -- or even what the subjunctive mood is. As if that wasn't enough, there's virtually not a single source online that explains the Spanish IB exams in an in-depth manner. Thus, I took it upon myself to create CasaIb, a website capable solving all of the above problems.

The Process

Over quarantine, I took Harvard's Introductory class to Computer Science, CS50, which taught me the basics of Web Design. This occured alongside my tutoring, and so as I began to learn the necessary skills to build a website, I realized that the best way to practice would be to create a Spanish-tutoring website! Of course, in order to build a website like this, I needed more than just this class. Therefore, I'd like to thank a few people.

Who to Thank

  • Preston Corless - The founder of an extensive gaming website, he helped me with many of my questions, especially in designing the functionality of the practice pages, and in particular, the preterite page.
  • W3Schools - This website was KEY to solving my many problems, as they provide simple yet beautiful explanations of the many core concepets of web design.
  • StackoverFlow - an extensive website that somehow had all the personal questions that no general textbook could solve.
